Hi Richard,

The mouse pointer issue you're experiencing might be due to a variety of reasons. One of which is due to recent changes made on your PC.

That being said, what were the recent changes made before this started to happen? What is the exact image of the mouse pointer you're seeing? Is it the same mouse pointer when trying to adjust a window size downward or upward?

In the meantime, let's run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter to find and repair problems with your devices and hardware.

1. Right-click the Start icon, then select Control Panel.
   
2. Choose the Large icons option from the View by drop-down list found on the upper-right part of the Control Panel window.
   
3. Locate then select Troubleshooting.
   
4. Click View all from the left pane.
   
5. Locate and click Hardware and Devices to run the troubleshooter then follow the next steps.

The only change I had made was to install Open Office.  I just uninstalled it and the issue remains after a restart.

The pointer looks like the 5th and 6th pointers in the pointer list from the Mouse Settings.

As for running trouble shooting:

  My settings window does not have drop down list in the upper right.

  I do not find anything labeled Troubleshooting in the Settings window so can not get to steps 4 & 5.

Just to make sure you're on the right track, are you looking at the Control Panel or Windows Settings? Make sure that you're in the Control Panel window.

You may also find updating your mouse driver very helpful. You may check for the latest mouse driver for your PC on your mouse driver manufacturer's website.

I do not find a separate Control Panel in W10.  The only thing I find is Settings.

This problem has occurred with two wireless mice and the finger pad.  I do not think is a hardware driver problem.

Do you mean, you cannot find any Control Panel from your PC?

Can you send us a screenshot of the Settings window you're referring to? Make sure that no personal information can be seen on the screenshot.

Have you tried typing "Control Panel" in the Cortana search field? If yes, weren't there any result?

I found the Control Panel using the search.

None of the View options for sizing icons was active.

I had to search for Troubleshooting as it did not show up anywhere that I could find on the control panel.

Troubleshooting brings up Programs, Hardware and Sound, Network and Internet, and System and Security.

I do not think this is a hardware problem.  I am currently using without a mouse, just the pad, and the pointer has the same problem.  Not sure, but this may have started after the latest Windows update.  I had used the laptop extensively prior to that without an issue.

Running the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter doesn't only mean that we're fixing only from the hardware. This can also isolate the issue you're experiencing, so I suggest you run it.

An outdated driver may lead into a performance issue. Have you tried getting the latest driver for your touchpad or for your mouse device? If not, you may check for it from your device driver manufacturer.

You may also perform a Clean Boot to make sure that no application is causing this. Clean Boot helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when running or installing a program in Windows 10.

1. From Start, search for msconfig.
   
2. Select System Configuration from the search results.
   
3. On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click Disable all.
   
4. On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click Open Task Manager.
   
5. On the Startup tab of the Task Manager, select the item for each startup item and then click Disable.
   
6. Close Task Manager.
   
7. On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click OK, and then restart the computer.

My mouse pointer changes to a large dashed vertical bar. Going to control panel and changing Mouse settings (options) there does not help. I noticed that this unauthorized mouse pointer change occurs sometimes when I browse porn sites in Mozilla Firefox.  Killing Firefox does not solve the issue, but re-booting restores the mouse pointer back to normal. I suspect that malicious website code changes the mouse pointer.

Hello Peter,

I will need more information to isolate the cause of the pointer issue. Kindly answer the following questions:

• Are you experiencing the same issue when using Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer?
• Are you getting any error messages?
• Have you tried performing a clean boot as instructed by Michelle Her?
• Is your Windows 10 PC up to date?
• Can you tell me the current OS Build of your Windows 10 system? You can find this information by clicking the Start button, type About your PC, press Enter, and then scroll down to Windows specifications.

For now, I suggest removing your current web browser and install the latest version. This ensures that the program is free of any known issues.

You may also want to scan your Windows 10 PC using Windows Defender Antivirus to make sure that it is not infected.

My mouse pointer changes to a pointer with a what looks a small vertical scroll bar.  Going into mouse properties and changing it back only lasts for a few minutes before it changes again.  While in this changed mode I can not dynamically size windows and it is difficult to properly point.

I have installed another mouse and the same thing occurs.  It is in the Windows 10.

I know this is a late reply, but I came across this issue today. After doing some troubleshooting, I identified that a soft button on the touchpad was pressed enabling some type of auto scroll feature. I had to go into the mouse properties and set it for trackpad only.

This was on a Lenovo Yoga Laptop. Hope this helps.
